Barnaul Machine Plant, the makers of Brown Bear ammunition, traces its origins back to an ammo factory founded in St. Petersburg in the 1860s by Alexander II, the Russian emperor best known in America for selling Alaska to the US. Starting with the Russian imperial army, Barnaul Machine Plant has produced ammo for each of the powers controlling Russia during its long history; during World War II, it was responsible for producing half of the Soviets’ total ammunition supply. The plant takes its name from its home city of Barnaul, where it evacuated during WWII and where it remains today. Its specialty today is rifle and shotgun cartridges.
